International Eagles: Mile Makes Socceroos Comeback

Crystal Palace skipper Mile Jedinak made his return from injury in Australia’s 1-0 defeat to Croatia at the weekend.

Jedinak had been out of action since picking up a groin problem in the Eagles’ 2-2 draw at Fulham on 11th May, restricting him to light training ahead of the Socceroos’ opening World Cup game against Chile on Friday.

But the 29-year-old made it through 74 minutes unscathed against their European counterparts on Saturday night, although he could not prevent his nation falling to a narrow defeat in their final World Cup warm-up match.

A second half strike from Hull City frontman Nikica Jelavic proved the difference between the two sides at the Arena Fonte Nova in Brazil, leaving Australia to start their campaign off the back of a defeat.

Meanwhile Jedinak’s Palace teammate Adrian Mariappa also found himself on the losing side as Jamaica were humbled 8-0 by World Cup dark horses France.

Mariappa played the full 90 minutes at centre half for the Reggae Boyz, but was powerless to stop Didier Deschamps’ men running riot in Lille.

Arsenal frontman Olivier Giroud was among those to get on the scoresheet ahead of France’s World Cup opener against Honduras, who held England to a goalless draw in Miami on Saturday.
