Williams follows in Ramsey's footsteps

Posted on: Tue 24 Aug 2010

First Year Academy Scholar John Williams became the second youngest player ever to represent the Wales U21 team two weeks ago when they played Malta in an international friendly.

Wales Coach Brian Flynn called up the 16 year old after being impressed by the youngster's record in the U17s, where he has scored one goal in 12 games.

Williams played the last 30 minutes of the friendly at the Ta' Qali Stadium, and was happy to have made the the squad, never mind playing.

"It was a really good experience for me to play with other professional players from other clubs and to go away with the national team to Malta.

"It was quite hot out there which made training a little bit harder, but I felt I did well when I came on for the last half-hour. After the game I was told I was the second youngest player to represent Wales U21 team with Aaron Ramsey currently holding the record."

With a fresh season of Academy football to look forward to this year Williams is now concentrating on cementing a place in Gary Issott's side.

"We start our season away at Leeds on Saturday (today) and I am just focussing on training hard each day and playing well for the Academy this season."
