Jonathan Williams picked up his League Football Education trophy from Dougie Freedman last night after being named September's Apprentice of the Month.

It was a whirlwind month for the 18 year-old who made five appearances for the Eagles and scored his first goal for the club against Wigan in the Carling Cup at Selhurst Park.

Those performances caught the attention of Wales national boss Gary Speed and saw Williams get the call to join the squad for their Euro 2012 qualifying games

Speaking exclusively to the club website, Williams spoke of his delight:

"I'm really pleased to win this award. I'll keep working hard to try and get a regular position in the first team. I feel it's important to that I'm working hard both on and off the pitch with my football and my college work."

Speaking about his recent call up to his national side, Williams said: " I didn't expect to be called up but to get the call was just an amazing feeling.

"I spoke to the manager (Gary Speed), he's really nice. He told me to keep on working hard and enjoy being around these top class players."

Dougie Freedman plucked the quick footed midfielder from the Academy during the summer and praised the youngsters attitude for making the transition at such a young age.

"It is fantasitc for the young man who deserves everything he gets in life because his attitude to work is very good so anything he gets he deserves, it will take many many years to learn and he is on the right path to become a very successful player."

LFE Regional Officer Gavin Willacy heaped more praise on the youngster who is excelling off the pitch as much as he is on it: "Jonny has continued to work superbly on his BTEC Extended Diploma and remains on target to gain a Triple Distinction grade overall in addition to completing his NVQ and Coaching Award. As if that is not enough, Jonny is also a very polite and pleasant young man!"
