Report: West Ham Ladies 5-1 Palace Ladies

Posted on: Tue 07 Sep 2010
After conceding a last minute goal in their last two defeats the Eagles travelled to local rivals West Ham.

West Ham themselves were struggling to find a win and had drawn their previous four games. The Eagles welcomed back Natalie Curtis at left back, Gina Johnson started up top and the final change saw Rachel Crosswell come in on the right side of midfield.

It was the home side that started the brighter and within the first 10 minutes had a string of long range shots that failed to trouble the Palace goalkeeper Sam Sharp.

Palace were looking dangerous on the break, the pace of Jonson and the vision and craft of Becky Merritt were giving the home side's defence a real test.

The deadlock was broken after the home side were awarded a penalty which was despatched confidently by the West Ham player.

Palace struck back immediately, once again Johnson forced a mistake in the back four, and then a good ball from Hayley Sloane found Merritt in the box, who twisted and turned in the box and finished well to draw level.

Just before the break Palace had a golden opportunity to take the lead, Merritt with another twist and turn in the box but unfortunately this time her shot was straight at the keeper.

The start of the second half saw the home side take the lead within a minute before pushing on to score two further goals in three minutes to effectively finish of the game.

Palace did rally and created several opportunities, a fine shot from 20 yards from new signing Aimee Peet brought out the best from the West Ham shot stopper and Rachel Crosswell had her shot cleared of the line.

West Ham managed to score in the last minute to compound Palace to their heaviest defeat of the season.

Manager Quinton Naidoo told of his disappointment after the game:

"Our performance today was not acceptable, and the players let themselves down and the club down- we will be better on Wednesday".
