Palace Ladies Share Spoils With Norwich City

Posted on: Tue 07 Sep 2010

Following last week's heavy defeat the Eagles were on the road again, this time away to the much-fancied Canaries.

Following early exchanges between both teams, Sherelle Walters burst through and onto a mistake by the home keeper following a routine back pass, and coolly stroked the ball home into an empty net.

Norwich pushed for the equaliser from the re-start, but the Palace defence all worked hard to keep the home team at bay, ably assisted by the experienced captain Kelly Newbound, and a returning Lisa Whitnall.

However, a free kick awarded to the home team on 22 minutes brought the Canaries back on level terms. At first it looked too far out to cause any concern, but it struck the back of an unsuspecting fellow Norwich striker which deflected it past keeper Deehy the wrong way. It was such a surprise that the Canaries initially did not celebrate the goal, all believing that the ball had gone dead.

The second half saw a continuation of pressure from both teams as they looked to forge ahead in the game, with the hard working Eagles hustling players all game and not allowing their opponents to settle on the ball. Kirsty Mitchell providing the midfield with much needed steel and determination.

Ten minutes into the second half Norwich stole into the lead, and this would now be a test of the young Ladies resolve. On 58 minutes an inspired substitution by Palace to bring on Kimberley Morris for the tiring Whitnall proved the tonic and fresh impetus needed, and less than a minute later the Eagles were level courtesy of a fine strike by the ever running Walters for her second of the game.

Manager Ian Jackson said after the game, "I am pleased for the Ladies, as they worked hard for a deserved equal share of the game and points. A much improved performance."
