Warnock: The Boys Are In Good Spirits

Posted on: Fri 02 Oct 2009

Neil Warnock admits that he frustrated by his side's recent wastefulness in front of goal, but pleased at the same time of the team's reaction in the past three games:

"It has been frustrating for me, and probably the fans as well, and the players that we can't take the opportunity to score the chance that we are creating, but it is seven points out of nine and I dont think anybody predicted the score at West Brom.

"But the boys have been in good spirits. The one thing you can say is that the Scunthopre thing was a one off and everything went wrong then, and they have really fought back and I think the fans have appreciated that."

Darren Ambrose, Paddy McCarthy and Victor Moses all came agonisingly close on Tuesday night when Palace should really have taken a lead going in to the half time break.

"We counted five [chances]. I thought it was a couple but when we looked at it at the end there were five good chances and you are not going to get more than that.

"But we were snatching at everything, and quite honestly we never looked like scoring even though I must of put my head in my hands about three times - I thought they were certain goals. That is how we are at the minute. I think it is19 games without scoring in the first half; it is a ridiculous statistic and we have to get over that."

Palace's next opportunity to halt this lengthening statistic is this Saturday when Blackpool visit Selhurst Park. They are a side that many had written off for relegation this year, but Neil is quick to point out their considerable talent that manager Ian Holloway has at his disposal.

"Ian is a bit like me, we enjoy wherever we go and sometimes Ian, like myself, is better when we dont have any money.

"They are a good club, I like Blackpool, they are a friendly club. People write them off but they have got good players and you look at Jason Euell,  [Ben] Burgess, they have got a striker, Bouazza has come back; it is good forward line. And they have got steady defenders and midifleders; it is a good recipe."

On the injury front Victor Moses was forced off in the second half after landing awkwardly on his ankle, while Paddy McCarthy was struggling with an illness on Tuesday night.

" [Victor's injury is] Nothing drastic, but whether it will be too soon for Saturday we will have to wait on that...we have to make sure it is not a slight strain, but we will not know until Saturday .

"McCarthy hasn't trained since Tuesday night - we have kept him in bed. Claude Davis, who has had the virus, is coming back on Friday so we have kept them out of the way to stop other players catching it."

Other players that have been missing are strikers Freddie Sears and Stern John, two players with proven goalscoring records.

"It is frustrating. I want to give the Selhurst faithful something to shout about. We are in a difficult period at the moment... Freddie Sears [is] out and Stern is going to be missing for a while, but there is good news with the young lad.

"Freddie is running and checking and if we had a game next week he would definitely be up for it. I am going to see how he is just in case he could be on the bench because we do need something on the bench to change a game. No disrespect to the youngsters but we do need a Sears or a Stern John to come off the bench and gives us some options.

And finally Saturday is the club's Family Day - where the main car park will host an afternoon of entertainment for all the family - which is a day that Neil always enjoys.

"I like them. I love getting to the ground and seeing all the kids. That is how football should be. I am glad the club have done it for a game like this. It is good for both teams when there is an atmosphere like that."
