Warnock "We had Some Great Chances"

Posted on: Tue 29 Dec 2009

The draw in Wales meant his side had earned four points over the xmas games but the boss feels it could have been more.

"I am disappointed obviously, we had some great chances. All right the goalkeeper made some great saves but we should have won it. We tried to be positive with the substitutions we made, I would rather have had a go and lost it.

"I knew they would have one chance, but I said at half-time lets have a go and not be afraid to lose it.

"But we had the best chances late and were a bit unlucky. You might not have seen it but Darren Ambrose had a great chance that hit Calvin Andrew on the back and Alan Lee had a couple of good chances. I think he should do better than that at the back post, they were made for him. But they defended really well didn't they? I thought both teams did, both teams worked hard."

A first half dismissal saw the home side reduced to ten men for what looked like it was for the defender being the last man at a foul but Warnock revealed things were not as they seemed.

"The sending off spoilt it I suppose, it wasn't for the fact that he was the last man, but he's lashed out at Dannsy after that and caught his lip. It was for violent conduct, he's stupid really because he's got there ahead of Dannsy but he's flashed his left elbow in his mouth and the referee was stood right there behind him.  We looked at it at half-time because we couldn't work out why he had sent him off, I was disappointed Dannsy hadn't played it to the next man alongside him, because he wasn't the last man but when you see it from the angle that the referee saw it it's not as daft as all the thousands of fans thought it was."

Victor Moses had to leave the field in the second half but the boss revealed there was no concern.

"He's not bad really, that's the type of tackle he's getting at the minute, it's the only way to stop him. One of those things, he's on fire and that's why I wanted to get him down the middle to have a go at their centre backs but we never quite got at them. All credit to them really, that's why they're in the position that they're in. It's not a false position, they are going to have set backs every now and then. I think its fantastic to see them where they are I'd love to see them go up, as long as it is below us."

Palace's best chances didn't come until late in the game once after changes were made by the boss from the bench.

"That's why I made the changes to try and test the goalie, but sometimes it's harder against 10 then it is against 11. The amount of effort they put in meant they tired at the end. I thought we kept the ball better in the second half so I was pleased with that. I thought we let the crowd affect us a bit in the first half, especially Neil Danns. He was the villain of the piece with the supporters and I thought he reacted a bit naively at times, he lost his concentration and it was a good lesson for him.

"But a good point when you look at the way we were decimated ourselves today. We had a young left back playing his first game of the season, young Clyney on the other side, I thought both did very well against tricky opposition. We had six strikers on the bench, not because I wanted to put an attacking bench out but because we had no one else. So I'm pleased to get a result."
