Palace started their three away matches in a week at Turf Moor with this game against the cup experts from the Championship. Burnley's cup exploits for the season ended at the weekend with a defeat against Arsenal whilst Saturday saw Palace back to winning ways, coming from behind to take the points against Preston North End.
One enforced change for Neil Warnock for this one as Matt Lawrence misses out with a hamstring injury which means Nathanial Clyne comes in at right back.
A quiet start to proceedings on the evening in windy conditions meant the first chance on either goal didn't come until the 14th minute when Chris McCann headed wide of the target from a free kick on the right hand side of the field. Just a further minute had gone by when Julian Speroni had to save a shot from Wade Elliott at the second attempt from close range.
One of Warnock's loan signings had the first opportunity for the visitors and that came from Anthony Stokes. The striker showed good control with his feet before unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the box which Brian Jensen was pleased to be able to tip over the bar.
Action was soon up the other end when Speroni had to save well from Martin Paterson as he shot from inside the box but the keeper saved the Clarets second shot on target of the evening.
Clint Hill then very nearly opened the scoring for Warnock's side when he got on the end of a John Oster corner but the chance went over the bar. It was not long though before the left back played a part in Palace breaking the deadlock. Shefki Kuqi got on the end of a ball upfield from Hill and as Jensen came out of his goal the striker made no mistake in slotting the ball past him and into the empty net after 25 minutes.
It was not long before the lead was increased. An Oster corner was cleared by Graham Alexander but it fell to Paul Ifill who shot at goal and his effort was deflected into the net by Clarke Carlisle giving Jensen no chance as the ball ended up in the corner of the net.
Burnley got themselves back into the match from a set piece after a corner from the left hand side found Elliott whose shot struck the crossbar and the rebound came out to Carlisle who made amends for the own goal beating Speroni with six minutes remaining of the half.
Into stoppage time of the half and Elliott had a shot saved by Speroni but the rebound was put back in towards goal but was deflected out wide with a saving tackle for a corner and Palace went into the break ahead.
An early opportunity for the home side saw a free kick being given just outside the box for a foul on Rhys Williams. The set piece was taken by Robbie Blake but Speroni was able to watch the effort go over his bar.
A good start to the half also saw for Owen Coyle's side also saw a Chris McCann effort blocked by Hill and then Williams put his shot wide with Speroni out of his goal.
An early change from the Palace bench saw Nick Carle return from suspension at the expense of John Oster. It was not long before a change was made by Coyle as well with Jay Rodriguez replacing Martin Paterson.
The home fans were calling for the dismissal of Jose Fonte on the hour mark when a foul was given against the defender for a challenge on Steven Thompson but only a yellow was shown as a free kick was given just outside the box. The shot came in from Chris McCann but was wide of the target.
A second Palace change was made from the bench on 67 minutes as Alan Lee replaced Stokes. Two further changes made by Coyne as Joey Gudjonsson and Chris Eagles were introduced to the game as it went into its final twenty.
Palace nearly extended the lead once again as Shaun Derry saw his shot from the edge of the box go just onto the roof of the net as a clearance from a Carle corner fell to the midfielder.
Eagles had an early chance to make an impact on the game when his fierce low shot was well saved by Speroni down at the foot of his right hand post.
The home side received a major decision from the linesman with nine minutes remaining as he gave a spot kick against a Palace defender and the protests were waved away and Graham Alexander stepped up to put the home side back on level terms.
As the home side went in search of the equaliser Palace went tried to make the most of the gaps but couldn't get any clear cut opportunities on goal and the next action was soon at the other end.
With two minutes remaining on the clock it was Burnley who broke and Eagles found Thomson who controlled the ball well before turning and shooting past Speroni to turn the deficit around and suddenly Coyle's side were heading towards the top six.
Worse was to follow as the same linesmen who gave the penalty decision decided Rodriguez was onside as he broke clear and with the 'keeper coming towards him he slotted the ball into the net and sealed the victory.
Disappointment for Palace having been two ahead and once again were guilty of questionable officials decisions and another Clarets comeback.
