Freedman: "Let's Get Back To Basics"

Posted on: Thu 14 Feb 2008

Dougie Freedman says Palace will go "back to basics" to get their season back on track.

Defeat against Ipswich Town was the Eagles' third in four games after going the previous 15 league matches unbeaten.

Neil Warnock held a dressing room meeting with his players following Tuesday night's defeat, and striker Freedman emerged to reveal how the Palace manager plans to return to winning ways.

"The manager's told us what he expects and what he wants to do - and we'll see how we'll get on," said Freedman.

"In no uncertain terms he has told us tonight what he wants. If we want to be part of it, come along. If we don't, then maybe they won't be here next season.

"We've got good players and a good manager but sometimes you can get carried away with yourself.

"We got in a play-off position and received a certain amount of media attention and it can affect players in different ways.

"Unfortunately it's affected one or two players in their performances but we've got a good manager who knows better than anyone - he has won six promotions - that to stand any chance of going up we need to get back to basics.

"That's what he's told the lads in the dressing room. He has told us what he expects and doesn't expect so we have to do our own jobs, work hard for each other and he will take any sort of blame that some his way."

Freedman believes the players have learnt some valuable lessons from the fall-out of the undefeated spell.

"The 15-game unbeaten run was a hell of an effort," he stressed, "so maybe the lads are mentally tired form that spell.

"Maybe we can say the play-offs are not for us this year and, anyway, it's not about looking at getting promotion.

"When you get in the play-off position you, all of a sudden, get more coverage in the media and unfortunately that can affect some players and maybe that has happened.

"We've got to not worry about getting promotion but worry about our individual form, which will lead to good team performances, which will lead to three points.

"It's about taking it game to game - and the next one is at Bristol City. When we were on the winning run that's how we approached it and that's how we will now.

"We were looking too far ahead we have to go back to viewing it on a game-to-game basis."
