Free SE25 With Your Programme This Sunday
The summer issue of SE25: The Official Magazine is available from this Sunday at the Crystal Palace vs Sheffield United match at Selhurst Park and will be FREE when you purchase your official match day programme.
The access all areas publication mixes feature interviews with behind the scenes articles that cannot be found anywhere else.
With this weekend the closest in the calendar to the 1978/79 Palace team's promotion to the old First Division, this issue celebrates that tremendous success with a series of nostalgic features and interviews that look back to the very best of that season.
There is an exclusive and extensive interview with Jim Cannon and Clint Hill, two defenders of similar style and passion but separated by 30 years of history. The two talk candidly about playing football then, the evolution of the footballer from the 1970s to the modern day and much more.
"I think defenders have probably got to be a bit better today." Jim told SE25. "They have got to be more aware because there is more emphasis on speed and fitness than when we were playing.
"You can't dive in now, whereas in our day, if you couldn't get the ball you got the man. If you did that twice in a game today you will be sent off, so I think it is harder for defenders today."
There is also an exclusive interview with the Academy coach Gary Issott. The widely accredited Under 18s coach has enjoyed huge successes in the last two seasons, but very little is actually known about the man behind one of the most successful youth academies in the country.
In this issue, Gary reveals how his career led to a role at the Beckenham training ground as well as detailing the role he plays in developing young talent for the Crystal Palace first team.
"The fact that you can change someone's life", he said. "Especially in this industry the dividing lines are so close which can see one lad go onto to earn £100 a week in non-league to another player earning £30-40k a week.
"It changes his life and people around him. That is one of the most fulfilling things, you can help people achieve their dreams and change their lives.
"But at 16 when you are telling a schoolboy that he is not going to be given a chance you can see in their eyes that you are killing their dream. For me that is the toughest aspect of being a coach - when it comes to the Under 16's level."
The only place to read these exclusive interviews and other revealing features - Getting To Know Nathaniel Clyne & Top Five : Goals of '78/79 to name just two - is in the summer issue of SE25, on sale from Sunday 3rd May.
With all of that, and more, this edition of SE25 is another excellent read so make sure you pick up your copy.
