Crystal Palace were knocked out of the Surrey Senior Cup after going down 6-2 to Croydon Athletic at the KT Stadium, but it needed extra time to separate the two sides after the tie finished 2-2 in normal time.
A hat trick from Rams' striker Ben Godfrey and strikes from Leslie Thompson, Rory Hill and Chris Piper cancelled out normal time goals from Taurean McDonald-Roberts and Rhys Williamson-Murrell.
McDonald Roberts opened the scoring for Palace on 21 minutes when he picked up a mistake in the Croydon midfield before firing low into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Croydon equalised five minutes from the break when Leslie Thompson's shot was well saved by Ross Fitzsimmons, but the ball spilled into path of Ben Godfrey who had the simplest of tap ins from eight yards.
The Eagles regained the lead on 68 minutes. Rhys Williamson-Murrell was played through from midfield and, one on one with the keeper, he kept his cool to slot the ball into the far post.
The game was sent into extra time four minutes later though when Chris Piper connected with an excellent Thompson cross from the right to head past Fitzsimmons.
But Palace's night took a major turn for the worse two minutes into extra time. A speculative long ball over the top looked to be covered by Dan Pringle until he suddenly collapsed holding his hamstring.
Godfrey showed his natural striker's instincts by picking up the loose ball, closing in on goal and slotting the ball underneath Fitzsimmons.
It was really unfortunate on the Palace centre half who has struggled with injury all season. His hamstring lasted for 90 minutes but the extra time proved too much and it will be a real blow for the young defender.
His injury meant that he had to leave the field, but Palace had used all of their subs and were forced to play the remainder of the game with only 10 men.
Croydon immediately set about taking advantage of the extra body and made it four four minutes later as Godfrey completed his hat trick with an emphatic header six yards out.
It was 5-2 ten minutes into the half. Substitute Rory Hill received the ball in the box and fired a fine effort across the Palace keeper that nestled inside the far post.
The win was capped off seven minutes from time when Thompson got his reward for a good display with a strong finish to the near post that Fitzsimmons could only parry into the side netting.
