Young Lions Beaten

Posted on: Tue 27 Jul 2010

Crystal Palace Academy product Nathaniel Clyne will be reporting back to Beckenham later this week after England's U19 team were knocked out of the European Championships by Spain this afternoon.

The Eagles right back played the full 90 minutes for Noel Blake's young Lions side who were competing for the chance to take on either France or Croatia in the Final.

England's chances were not helped after they conceded two goals within the first 40 minutes. However, on the brink of half-time they were given a lifeline when John Bostock fired in a volley from the edge of the box into the bottom right corner.

After the half-time break England came out looking for a goal but were unable to stop Spain from passing the ball around the pitch with such dominance.

The game was treated to its third goal on the 56th minute after Spain executed a training ground set-piece. With three players standing over the ball 25 yards from goal Oriol Romeu shaped to shoot but cleverly clipped the ball over the wall allowing Canales, who had spun away from his marker, to cooly finish from six yards.

England did try and up the tempo during the last 20 minutes but could not find a way back into the tie.

Palace Player subscribers will be able to watch an Exclusive interview with Nathaniel Clyne upon his return, to give his verdict on the competition and how he is looking forward to the new Championship campaign. Remember, 'Think Palace, Think Player'.
