Friendly : Brentford 1-1 Crystal Palace

Posted on: Sat 31 Jul 2010

Crystal Palace came away with a 1-1 draw at Griffin Park on Friday night after Kieron Cadogan equalised on the hour mark following Nicky Forster's first half strike.

It was the Eagles who took the initiative in the opening minutes when Calvin Andrew collected the ball on the edge of the box. With time and space the former Luton striker hit a shot at goal but lacked power to beat Simon Moore at his bottom right.

Six minutes later the Bees registered their first shot on target, but just like Andrew, Myles Weston shot did not have enough purchase to trouble Julian Speroni in goal.

Adam Barrett nearly scored his first goal for the club on the 14th minute, although it would have been at the wrong end, when he slid in to clear a tricky cross along the six yard box but managed to clear the ball over Speroni's bar.

From the resulting corner Michael Spillane should have scored when he somehow headed the ball wide of the goal from seven yards having eluded his marker to find space in the box.

On the 27th minute the game saw it's first goal when Nicky Forster blasted the ball home from close range. Weston got put through the middle and ran into the box, Barrett defended valiantly and threw his body at Weston's shot which cannoned off the former Southend defender, Weston shot again and this time was on target but Speroni was only able to parry the shot and Forster to scored from three yards.

Andrew nearly grabbed an equaliser on the 30th minute when the keeper had to turn his header around the post and Palace went into the break behind.

After the half-time interval George Burley decided to replace Calvin Andrew with Alan Lee and Kieran Djiali came on for Wilfried Zaha and appeared to change his formation to a 4-4-2 with Ambrose moving out to the left.

Zaha showed his intent on the 48th minute when he broke from the half-way line and with no pressure he elected to shoot from range, however he could not keep his shot down as it went well over the bar.

On the 60th minute Kieron Cadogan cut inside from the right wing and headed straight for the box beating two Bees players in the process, as he got to the edge of the box he was taken down leaving Andy D'Urso to point for a free kick. Ambrose stepped up to the set-piece and his fierce strike forced Moore to tip the ball over the bar.

From the resulting corner Ambrose found Davis whose leaping header should have been saved by Moore but Cadogan was on hand in front of the keeper to simply head the ball with the back of his head into an empty net.

Second half sub Sam Saunders nearly gave his team the lead again the 72nd minute when his free kick from the left of the box looked destined for the top right until Speroni tipped over.

Both teams continued to have chances and in the remaning five minutes both teams could have grabbed another but at the end of 90 minutes it remained a goal a piece at Griffin Park.
