Clubs: Belfast Distillery, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Newport County

John Conner was only a little fellow of 5ft 8ins and just 11 stone but despite this he was renowned as a powerful header of the ball and many of his 29 league goals during the 1920/21 Division Three championship season were scored with his head.

John was also extremely fast and nimble while he possessed a remarkable body-swerve which could prove thoroughly disconcerting to opposing defenders. His shooting was strong, accurate and effective - and much admired within the game.

Formerly with Sunderland, John scored 18 Southern League goals in his first season at Palace immediately after the First World War, proving the ideal partner for veteran striker Ted Smith. As Ted's star began to wane John became Palace's leading goalscorer and set the club on its way to greater things.
