Clubs: Mansfield Town, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers
After John Whibley left Palace in 1923 the outside-left position became something of a problem for manager Edmund Goodman but he filled it two years later with a stroke of absolute genius by obtaining the signature of George Clarke from Aston Villa.
After joining from Villa George became a fixture in the Palace side and but for the occasional injury he remained there for the next seven seasons. He was a brilliant winger and a ball player with plenty of skill and the possessor of a lethal shot.
Even though he scored a large number of goals George's main contribution to the club was providing chances from which centre-forwards could scored goals. Percy Cherrett fed off him for two seasons but it was Peter Simpson who benefited most from the work of the talented left-winger and it is no coincidence that Peter scored more goals in each of the three seasons in which Clarke was his teammate than in any of the succeeding campaigns.
