Cliff Holton

Cliff Holton in action against Swansea City

Clubs: Arsenal, Watford, Northampton Town, Crystal Palace, Watford, Charlton Athletic, Leyton Orient

Following a supremely successful career as a goalscorer at Arsenal, Watford and Northampton, cliff Holton became Palace manager Dick Graham's answer to the perilous situation the club was in as midwinter 1962/63 approached.

Cliff had a magnificent physique, was always commanding in the air and possessed a fearsome shot. He made his Palace debut on Boxing Day 1962 teaming up for the first time with Dicky Dowsett and Ronnie Allen to help the Eagles to a 3-0 victory over Millwall.

His contribution to the Palace cause would have been deserving of praise if it had stopped at the end of 1962/63 with Palace safely in mid-table but, 12 months later, and courtesy of 20 league goals in 1963/64 Palace were promoted to Division Two for the first time in 39 years.

When Cliff was transferred back to Watford in early May 1965 Palace supporters were greatly displeased but today those who were privileged to see him play remember Cliff at Selhurst Park with enormous pleasure.
