Wilf Innerd

Wifred Innerd

Clubs: Newcastle United, Crystal Palace

Wilfred was a Geordie who joined Palace at the club's inception in 1905 and played a major part in its establishment. He usually featured at wing or centre-half, although he was able to provide cover for several forward positions. Consequently, until he was badly hurt during the club's FA Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 1909, he was seldom absent from the team.

In 1906 Wilf took over as the club's captain following the departure of Ted Birnie. At the time Palace were embarking on their first season in the Southern League Division One - a much tougher assignment than the Second Division in 1905/06. Yet, under Wilf's leadership, and well motivated by his experience, inspiration and talent, the club immediately produced a magnificent FA Cup run followed by a fourth place finish in 1907/08.
