Peter Taylor was a fast, stocky, goalscoring winger who brought who was brought to SE25 by manager Malcolm Allison. He was certainly Malcolm's best signing for the Eagles and Peter repaid his transfer fee several times over with some brilliant left-foot drives and tantalising crosses.
Usually wearing number 11 despite operating largely on the right, Peter was speedy, with neat control. His shooting was accurate and his use of the dead ball situations was intelligent and effective. While he was with the Eagles Peter gained four England Under 23 caps (two of them in matches staged at Selhurst Park) and scored in every game. He also won four full England caps while at Selhurst Park and netted on his first two appearances for the national side.
Peter hit the national headlines with spectacular displays in Palace's fabulous run to the FA cup semi-final in 1976 when he was our on-field inspiration in magnificent away victories at Leeds United, Chelsea and Sunderland. It became inevitable that he would move to a bigger club and in September 1976 he joined Tottenham Hotspur for £200,000.
After his retirement from playing, Peter went on to become a successful coach and manager and following notable success with Gillingham, Brighton and Hove Albion, Hull City and the England Under 21 side, he was appointed as manager of Crystal Palace in June 2006 and will be hoping to enjoy similar success in the Selhurst Park hotseat as he did on the pitch.
