Terry Venables
Clubs: Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace
International honours: England
Manager: Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers, Barcelona, Tottenham Hotpsur, England, Australia, Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, Leeds United
In 1976/77, Terry's first season in management he took Palace up from the Third Division after bringing in George Graham and then Jeff Bourne. The latter was a brilliant coup; for Jeff scored nine vital goals in the last 15 games and the season ended with a brilliant 4-2 win at Wrexham when, with barely 90 seconds left Palace were drawing 2-2 and doomed to remain in the Third Division.
Two years later a different, highly talented and extremely youthful side fashioned by Terry finally won the Second Division title with a 2-0 win over Burnley in front of a record crowd at Selhurst Park. The next season Palace's progress under Terry continued - briefly. The club took the top-flight by storm in 1979 and topped the league table in September only to begin to fall away by the end of the season.
Early in 1980/81 it was apparent that, while the deterioration of the club was continuing, Terry was unable to arrest it and he then left to take over at Queens Park Rangers before going on to manager Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and then England.
Terry returned to Selhurst Park in the summer of 1998 and he received a rapturous welcome at Palace's opening league fixture of 1998/99. Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, Terry was unable to bring any success in his second spell at Selhurst Park and in January 1999 he moved aside in a series of cost cutting measures by chairman Mark Goldberg.
