Clubs: Northampton Town, Crystal Palace, Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City, South Shields
George Whitworth was a brave, strong centre-forward who had guested for the club during the First World War before proving his ability with Northampton Town. When Edmund Goodman needed a quality centre-forward to replace Bert Menlove, who had moved to First Division Sheffield United in March 1922 it was to George that he turned.
He made his Football League debut for the club at Bury where he scored the equalising goal before half-time, hit the bar after the interval before creating the winning goal for Ben Bateman. Some debut!
It was after 1923 that Palace fans saw George at his best. Now playing at inside-right, George was top scorer with 17 goals but he also combined with his other forward so effectively that Palace had a comfortable season in the Second Division. George moved to Sheffield Wednesday in 1925 but his 50 goals for the club, scored when Palace were far from being a great side, were easily the best tally in the period 1921 - 1925.
