A versatlie defender who can play anywhere across the defence as well as a defensive midfield role, Johannes Ertl became the third signing of the summer when he joined the Eagles on a two-year contract.

Ertl, 25, began his career in the youth team at his hometown club, SK Sturm Graz, where he did enough to be offered a professional contract. However, in 2003, he was sent out on loan to gain first team experience and signed for SC Kalsdorf. Upon his return to Graz, Ertl had impressed in his 11 performances on loan and was given a starting spot in the 'Grazers' first eleven and went on to make over 60 appearances at centre-half.

In May 2006, Ertl's performances were recognised by Austria head coach, Josef Hickersberger, who drafted him into the squad for a game against Croatia. Even though he failed to make an appearance on that occasion he didn't have to wait long to don the red shirt for the first time. On August 16th 2006, Ertl replaced Wigan defender Paul Scharner to make his debut against Hungary. He has gone on to make a further seven appearances for the Austrians, who are ranked 105th in the world.

At the end of August, Austrian Bundesliga side Austrian Wien, snapped up the young defender where he signed a contract until 2008. He went on to make 50 appearances and scored three goals.
