## Our Senegalese Sarr

> Ismaïla Sarr became the club’s third signing of the 2024/25 summer transfer window after joining on a five-year deal from Olympique de Marseille.

The 26-year-old attacker possesses plenty of experience of English football, having spent four years at Watford – recording 34 goals and 22 assists in 131 games – prior to joining Marseille, whom he helped reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League last season.

Sarr's career began in French football with Metz, before moving to Rennes and leading the club into Europe, as well as winning their first Coupe de France in almost half a century.

At international level, he has been a mainstay of the Senegal national side, earning 64 caps, scoring 13 goals and winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021.

His career has also been defined by his eye for the spectacular, having won Goal of the Season awards in both the Football League and the Europa League.

Sarr was ever-present in every Premier League matchday squad in his first season at the club, playing in all 38 games, while also featuring in a further nine cup games. He scored 11 goals across all competitions, with eight additional assists - including a stunning effort against rivals Brighton & Hove Albion and a brace against Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-final.

### Spain – Yéremy Pino

**Yéremy Pino** was in action on Saturday evening, hoping to help Spain seal World Cup qualification this month.

The Palace No. 10 – who scored in the previous international window against Georgia – featured as a late substitute for the final 10 minutes of the return match at Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi, with his side four goals to the good at that point.

Although he did not score on his 18th cap, Pino did come close with a late effort. Luis de la Fuente's *La Roja* team are three points clear with one match remaining in Group E; only a seven-goal loss in Seville against second-placed Turkey on Tuesday will deny Spain automatic qualification.

### Senegal – Ismaïla Sarr

Senegal have already secured World Cup qualification last month, when Sarr registered two goals, an assist and his 75th cap on the way to securing *Les Lions de la Teranga*'s place at the finals.

Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations kicking off in December, Senegal began their preparations more locally for Sarr initially, facing Brazil at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Sarr played the full 90 minutes against the five-time world champions in North London, but it was Carlo Ancelotti's side who were the dominant team, as goals from Chelsea's Estevao and Manchester United's Casemiro sealed Brazil's win.

Senegal will next be in action in Turkey on Tuesday, facing Kenya in Antalya.

### England – Henderson & Wharton

**Marc Guéhi**, **Dean Henderson** and **Adam Wharton** were all initially called up by England for the Three Lions’ upcoming pair of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

It was confirmed on Friday that Guéhi, however, had left the England camp, returning to Palace for his rehabilitation following an injury sustained against AZ Alkmaar last week.

Having previously sealed top spot in Group K, England took on Serbia at Wembley on Thursday night knowing their place at next summer's finals was already assured.

And the Three Lions extinguished any Serbian hopes of qualification by securing another win under Thomas Tuchel – Bukayo Saka’s first-half goal putting them on the right path.

Midfielder Wharton was then introduced as a substitute for Elliot Anderson in the second-half, winning his second England cap – and his very first at Wembley.

Within a few minutes of his introduction, the Three Lions had another goal, Wharton’s former Palace teammate Ebere Eze slamming home a fine finish to complete a 2-0 victory.

Henderson was an unused substitute on the night. However, Tuchel could well give either of them an opportunity to impress in England’s final qualifier at the weekend. The squad will travel to Air Albania Stadium to face Albania on Sunday, 16th November (17:00).

### France – Jean-Philippe Mateta

Having enjoyed a memorable first window as a senior France international in October – debuting, and then days later scoring on his first start – **Jean-Philippe Mateta** retains his place in Didier Deschamps' *Les Bleus* squad.

France were looking to secure four points from their remaining two UEFA Group D qualifiers this fortnight to seal their place at the finals – starting with a home tie against Ukraine at Parc des Princes on Thursday.

Mateta this time had to settle for a place on the bench, with Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé starting in the central striking role. And it was Mbappé who opened the scoring in the 55th minute from the penalty spot.

Further goals from former Palace man Michael Olise, Hugo Ekitike and another from Mbappé sealed a 4-0 win, meaning Les Bleus can now look forward to the World Cup in America.

The Palace No. 14 remained an unused substitute on this occasion. However, he will have another chance to add to his two senior caps when France play Azerbajian in Baku at the weekend in their final qualifier.

### Northern Ireland – Justin Devenny

**Justin Devenny** and Northern Ireland's World Cup qualification quest were forced to detour on Friday evening with a late 1-0 defeat against Slovakia in Košice.

After a series of impressive displays at left wing-back, the 22-year-old has established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet for Michael O'Neill's *Green and White Army.*

Eaning his eighth start in a row – and his 10th cap overall – against Slovakia, Devenny and his young teammates struggled to carve out chances against a Slovakia side who grew in confidence.

The hosts went on two have not one, but two, second-half goals ruled out for offside – before a late corner kick was misjudged by their goalkeeper, allowing Tomas Bobcek to slam home in the first minute of stoppage time.

The defeat means that Northern Ireland cannot now secure a top-two finish in Group A – but they will compete in the play-offs as a UEFA Nations League group winner, which will be contested by 16 different teams in March 2026.

Michael O'Neill's team will at least hope to finish off their current group in style against Luxembourg next week – opponents who have scored just once, and conceded 12, in their five defeats thus far – in the final round of matches.

### Japan – Daichi Kamada

Having himself recently defeated Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil with Japan last month, **Daichi Kamada** and *Samurai Blue* are contending with another pair of friendlies in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup.

Japan first defeated Ghana 2-0 at Toyota Stadium in Aichi, Japan, on Friday, with goals from Takumi Minamino and Ritsu Doan. Kamada was an unused substitute.

The Palace playmaker will hope to be involved when Japan host Bolivia in Tokyo early next week.

### Colombia – Lerma & Muñoz

### Argentina – Walter Benítez

Goalkeeper **Walter Benítez** was called up for an eighth successive international window for the world champions.

*La Albiceleste* took part in a warm-up friendly against Angola in Luanda, winning out 2-0 thanks to goals from Lautaro Martinez and Lionel Messi; Benítez was an unused substitute.

### France Under-21s – Jaydee Canvot

Recent Premier League debutant **Jaydee Canvot** was included in a third successive France Under-21s squad, having made his first start – an impressive 90 minutes at right-back in a 6-1 win over Serbia – in last month's window.

This time around, France's 100 percent start to UEFA European U21 Championship qualification came to an end with a 1-1 draw away to Switzerland in Lausanne.

Canvot once again played the full match at right-back but, after his team fell behind midway through the first-half, helped *Les Bleuets* to fight back in the second-half with a goal from Bournemouth's Eli Junior Kroupi.

Next up, France host current group leaders Faroe Islands.

From Owen Goodman’s first senior Canada call-up to further opportunities for Joél Drakes-Thomas, Charlie Walker-Smith, and Matteo Dashi – ***find out which young Eagles are on international duty below!***

Palace U21s wing-back **Joél Drakes-Thomas** registered an assist as England Under-17s produced a stunning comeback to beat the USA 5–2 on Thursday afternoon (13th November).

The young Lions trailed 2–0 with half an hour remaining before mounting an impressive fightback. Goals from Mathis Eboue, Kyran Thompson, and Brian Madjo turned the game on its head, with Eboue completing his hat-trick late on.

Drakes-Thomas entered the action after 79 minutes, replacing Thompson, and made an immediate impact. The Palace wing-back twisted and turned his way into the box before standing up a cross to the back post, where Eboue headed home England’s fifth to complete the comeback.

Joél then started on Saturday (15th November) in a 1–1 draw with Côte d’Ivoire, playing the full 90 minutes. 

Liam Bramley’s side went ahead around ten minutes into the second period through Calvin Diakite. Floyd Samba’s delivery fell to the defender at the back post to open the scoring. However, the Young Lions’ opponents equalised with 74 minutes played as it finished all square at JA Resorts.

England play their final game of 2025 against Australia on Tuesday 18 November (11.30am GMT kick-off).

Drakes-Thomas started all three games in England's European Championship qualifying campaign and has previously been capped three times at Under-16 level. He was first called up to the U17s in September but was forced to withdraw from the squad.

A regular for Palace’s U21s, he has impressed down the right flank with his pace and attacking threat.

**Owen Goodman** has earned his first senior call-up to the Canada Men’s National Team for the upcoming November internationals against Ecuador and Venezuela.

Currently on loan at League One side Huddersfield Town, the 21-year-old previously represented Canada at youth level, making his debut for the U20 team in April 2022 in two friendly matches against Costa Rica.

Goodman’s call-up comes off the back of an outstanding 24/25 season, during which he played a key role on loan at AFC Wimbledon. Across 54 competitive appearances, he kept 25 clean sheets, including three consecutive shutouts in the play-off semi-finals against Notts County and the final against Walsall, helping the Dons secure promotion.

His performances earned him the League Two Golden Glove for most clean sheets and a place in the League Two Team of the Season. Of those 25 shutouts, 24 came in League Two, a tally that ranks joint-second for clean sheets in a single season since records began in 2006/07.

Canada opened their November fixtures at home to Ecuador on Friday 14th November at BMO Field in Toronto (12:30 GMT), with the match finishing 0-0.

Goodman was not involved in the matchday squad but remains part of the squad for the international window. The team will next travel to face Venezuela on Wednesday 19th November at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (01:30 GMT).

This marks the final international window of 2025 ahead of the FIFA World Cup year, with Canada looking to finish strongly after recording six wins, five draws, and two losses. The team reached its highest-ever FIFA ranking of #26 in September following historic back-to-back victories over Romania and Wales.

**Matteo Dashi** made his second appearance of the international window as Albania U19s recorded a goalless draw against Slovakia in their UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying fixture in Durrës on Friday (15th November).

Despite the 0–0 scoreline, the match proved an engaging contest. Heavy watering ahead of kick-off left surface water across parts of the pitch in the first half, occasionally disrupting play as passes held up unexpectedly. 

Albania continued to grow into the game and were handed a late advantage when Slovakia’s captain was dismissed in the closing stages.

Dashi entered the match in the 89th minute, replacing Sassuolo U20 forward Gabriel Kulla, as head coach Julian Ahmataj sought additional attacking impetus for the final moments.

The appearance followed the forward’s 68-minute outing in Albania’s opening Group B5 qualifier on Wednesday (12th November), where they were beaten 3–0 by Ukraine at the Niko Dovana Stadium. The visitors opened the scoring shortly before the interval and added two further goals late in the second half.

This qualification round forms part of the pathway towards the 2026 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, with Albania serving as host nation for the Group B5 mini-tournament.

Dashi and his teammates will conclude their campaign when they face Montenegro next week.

U18s centre-back **Charlie Walker-Smith** played the full 90 minutes as Wales U19s earned a dramatic 3–2 victory over Japan on Wednesday (12th November) at Central Park in Denbigh.

Cruz Allen’s stoppage-time strike sealed the win for Cymru in the 94th minute, after an entertaining contest that saw both sides exchange early goals. Joshua Gentles and William Grainger struck inside the opening quarter of an hour, before Yamamoto Takato and Sakai Shunya pulled Japan level midway through the first half.

**Walker-Smith** featured again in the squad on Saturday (15th November), this time as an unused substitute in Wales’ impressive 5–4 penalty-shootout victory over the USA.

Makenzie Bradbury’s 14th-minute opener was cancelled out by Jonathan Shore on 67 minutes, and with the score locked at 1–1 the game went straight to penalties, where Wales held their nerve to make it back-to-back victories.

These fixtures form part of Wales’ preparations for the 2026 UEFA Under-19 European Championship, which will be hosted in north Wales next summer. The mini-tournament – designed to mirror the standards and structure of next year’s finals – sees Cymru take on Japan, the USA, and current European champions Germany across three venues in the region.

Wales conclude their schedule against Germany on Tuesday (18th November, 11am) at the Hops and Barley Community Stadium in Rhyl.
