Hayden Mullins made his senior debut for the club at just 19 years of age in the 1998 UEFA Intertoto Cup match against Turkish club Samsunspor – a month later Terry Venables handed the midfielder his domestic debut in a 3–3 draw against Bolton Wanderers.
Mullins soon established himself as a regular in the side and had the perfect start to his professional career when he was voted the Player of the Season by the fans in his first season.
The versatile player was in the side that reached the semi-final of the League Cup in 2001 and again enjoyed cup success when in 2003 the club reached the quarter-final of the same competition, which included a memorable 2-0 win against Liverpool at Anfield.
The 2002/03 campaign also saw him named Player of the Year for a second time, in what proved to be his final full season in SE25.
