Jerry Murphy’s Palace career started as part of the FA Youth Cup-winning squad in ‘77 and ’78 before getting the opportunity of first-team football under Terry Venables, which was soon to see him help the club to promotion.
The midfielder’s first full season in the side was the promotion-winning 1978/79 campaign, in which he made 49 appearances.
The south Londoners stayed in the top-flight for three seasons before relegation saw them return to the second-tier. Murphy stayed with the club and won the Player of the Season award in 1983.
His fine performances gained him international recognition: qualifying through his father’s nationality, he picked up three full caps for the Republic of Ireland.
