Defender Jimmy Hughes had his Palace career interrupted due to the outbreak of World War I but he still amassed over 200 games in the Southern League for the club. Only two other players made more appearances in that league for Palace than the Bootle-born centre-half.
Hughes was as good as ever-present from when he took his place in the line-up in October 1909 - a winning debut against Leyton – before then scoring a goal in the next match to help secure victory over Plymouth.
Hughes continued with the club after the war but an injury in the 1919/20 season during a London Challenge Cup tie sidelined him and forced the defender to leave the club soon after.
