John McCormick only made a couple of appearances in his first season but in the 67/68 he broke into the side.
The promotion campaign was to follow and he was an ever-present, forming a solid defensive partnership with fellow centre-half, Mel Blyth, to play a major part in keeping the club in Division One for four years.
McCormick holds the proud record of winning the club’s first Player of the Season award for the 1971/72 campaign.
McCormick’s considerable efforts in south London were rewarded in September, 1974, when the club awarded him a testimonial match against Queens Park Rangers.
