John Sewell moved across London from Charlton in October, 1963, and holds the proud record of being the captain of the first Palace side to win promotion to the top-flight - that memorable 1968/69 season.
In that success of 1969, he made 35 league appearances and led the Glaziers to second place. Sewell took his place and captain’s armband into the top-flight and made 70 appearances there - adding four goals to his name.
His last outing in a Palace shirt was for his testimonial on 13th May, 1971, against F.C. Bruges and an attendance of 9,000 were present to say their thanks for his eight years of service.
