After being signed by Alan Mullery from Aylesbury United in February, 1984, Phil Barber was then welcoming a new manager in the summer of 1984: Steve Coppell.

The Tring-born left-winger needn’t have worried about whether the change in manager would limit his game-time, with Barber a near ever-present in the promotion-winning campaign of 1988/89.

Barber’s final season saw the club achieve a third-place Division One finish in May, 1991, meaning he departed on a high and with 288 appearances against his name for the south Londoners.
