Richard Shaw rose to prominence through the club’s famed youth set-up and signed his first professional contract in 1987. The defender was soon a member of the first-team squad and made 17 appearances during the promotion-winning 88/89 season.
The start of the next decade saw him form part of the side that retained its status in the top-flight and a thrilling FA Cup run, which culminated in the Eagles reaching the final for the first time against Manchester United.
The following season also saw Palace and Shaw return to Wembley, and this time it would have a sweeter ending with Palace winning the Zenith Data Systems Cup to go alongside Palace’s third-place finish in Division One.
After relegation in ’93 Shaw made 41 appearances the following season when Alan Smith led the side to the Division One title. Two cup semi-finals and another campaign of top flight football, as well as collecting the Player of the Year award were completed by the Brentford-born defender in ‘94/95, which was to be his final season at the club.
