U23s Report: Watford 1-1 Crystal Palace

29 September 2018

Jonny Williams’ well-worked goal wasn’t quite enough for a youthful development side to claim victory against Watford.

The Welshman struck after only 13 minutes after the Hornets failed to adequately clear their lines, and Giovanni McGregor found Kian Flanagan 30 yards from goal. He clipped a brilliant no-look pass over the defence for Williams to latch onto, and he half-volleyed into the net to cap an excellent move.

The Eagles continued the pressure and after only an excellent sliding challenge prevented TQ Addy tucking the ball home at the far post, Addy curled the ball inches wide of the post after linking up well with Flanagan.

After the break Joe Tupper had to be alert to prevent a stabbed shot by Ryan Cassidy finding the net after a scrappy period of play, but Watford, managed by former Palace man Hayden Mullins, were creating the more threatening chances and a combination of Nikola Tavares and Tupper did well to thwart Michael Folivi after he latched onto a through-ball.

However on 67 minutes the attacker did etch his name onto the scoresheet. Left-back Michael Mullins started the move after he won possession on the left and carried the ball across the pitch towards the box and had a shot blocked, but the ball was only cleared as far as Folivi lurking just outside the area and he curled a brilliant shot over Tupper and into the top corner.

There was a late chance for Flanagan to clinch all the points for Palace after he was sent racing down the left flank towards goal but saw his strike saved by the legs of Howes, forcing Richard Shaw’s team to settle for a draw.

Palace: Tupper, D. Boateng, Tavares, Woods, Mitchell, McGregor, Robertson, Williams (Aveiro 65), Flanagan, Addy, Keutcha. Subs not used: Webber, Chamberlin-Gayle, Onoabhagbe, M. Boateng.
