Crystal Palace Under-23s fell to three goals against Barnsley yesterday afternoon at the Tykes' Oakwell stadium.
Barnsley looked talented from kick off and the Eagles were frustrated to put wide or high several chances that, on another day, they may have rippled the net with.
After threatening Palace only tamely for the clash's opening 20 minutes, the hosts opened their account for the afternoon with a fine effort from Elliot Simoes. Having done well to win possession in the first place, Barnsley's No.9 picked up the ball from an awkward Alex Wollerton pass at close range before managing to work himself into sighting goal and unleashing the ball unhesitantly into Palace's bottom right corner.
The visiting south Londoners saw chances of their own and were very much still in the game at the half-hour mark, but neither Jason Lokilo nor Brandon Pierrick could find the target with their respective efforts.
In the last notable chance of the first half, Barnsley were the team to nearly leave their mark as the ball cannoned off the post from a Callum Styles shot.
Simoes enjoyed better luck in the second half, however, burying from left of the goal with power.
Looking to fight their way back into the clash, Nya Kirby shot close to the post before Under-18 prospect Joshua Ajayi struck wide shortly afterwards.
Palace's mis-hit chances going forward were soon to take their toll when Barnsley netted the game's third and final goal, Jack Sherlock breaking through the visiting defence and slotting home with confidence.
