The Magic is Back!
“The FA Cup has a unique place in English sporting culture and a magic all of its own. It has consistently generated some of the great stories and classic sporting moments.”
It’s a 19 inch silver pot that weighs 11lb (5kg), yet for five generations this trophy has been the foundation of English Football, the bedrock from which all other competitions have taken place.
Founded in 1871 when FA secretary Charles Alcock set up a tournament “for which all clubs belonging to the Association should be invited to compete”. This democratic foundation of the competition, which today sees Manchester United register alongside Mangotsfield United, is the key to its emotive appeal and a constant sporting reference for millions of people throughout the country.
According to the FA, the estimated global viewing audience for the 2005 final at the Millennium Stadium, where Arsenal beat Manchester United on penalties, was 484 million. That figure dwarfs the audiences for many other major sporting events. The 2012/13 final at Wembley in May next year will be seen in over 160 countries.
This season’s tournament – which began last September with 763 teams – reaches the third Round, and time for Crystal Palace to make their mark…

As the great Danny Blanchflower famously said: "The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."
