No Rain In Spain

30 July 2012

We catch up with the latest news from the first team squad on their trip to Spain.

Crystal Palace’s pre-season trip to Malaga kicked off yesterday with Dougie Freedman’s players reporting to Gatwick Aiport for 4.30pm.
After a slight delay the plane left the runway at 8pm and landed at Malaga airport just after 10.20pm BST. The players then made their way to the team bus, and within 30 minutes had arrived at their secluded hotel in the mountains and were soon turning their attention to the pre-season training over the next few days.

Freedman and his coaching set-up made the decision to delay training by an hour to 11am, so the players were allowed some extra time to rest before settling down for breakfast at 9am.
Taking on fluids was the main priority for the squad at breakfast, with a bottle of water less than a foot away from any one player at any given time. As the 11am session approached the temperature had already hit 28 degrees. Fair haired Jonathan Williams was seen slapping on the sun lotion to avoid burning in the blistering heat as he was just one player having to take precaution against the burning temperatures.
The heat did not make any difference to the intensity of the sessions with all of the players putting in hard work to ensure they are ready for the start of the new Championship campaign which kicks off in less than three weeks' time.
New signing Joel Ward spoke to Palace Player after the morning session and mentioned how effective these training camps are.
“It is good to get away with the team before a new season as it allows everyone to bond as a team and you get to know each other better. The trip down to Exeter was meant to do that but due to adverse weather conditions it meant the trip had to be stopped short.
“The weather out here is brilliant and it is a change of scenery. The sessions have been good so far and everyone is focused on working hard. It is all about building towards the start of the season and we are going in the right direction.”
