Tugby's Tips: Man United

21 February 2014

After making it a hat-trick of winners by tipping up Tom Ince to bag a debut goal against West Bromwich Albion a fortnight ago, former bookmaker and Palace Programme editor Luke Tugby talks us through his latest selections for the televised clash with Manchester United.

Crystal Palace are probably the shortest price they have ever been to defeat Manchester United in a Premier League fixture, with SkyBet offering 5/1 on an Eagles win. The visitors are 8/13 to bag all three points, while the draw is available at 13/5.

United are without a win in their four away games in all competitions so far during this calendar year, but don't read too much into that run - they had gone 11 games unbeaten on the road prior to their recent bout of travel sickness.

The main concern for serial United backers this weekend though will be the thinking of manager David Moyes, who may well have one eye on Tuesday's Champions League trip to Olympiakos. With the Champions League his only hope of winning some silverware in his first season in charge, the Scot could decide to rest some of his bigger names at Selhurst. That makes the 5/1 on Palace look all the more tempting.

Tony Pulis' men have of course racked up three consecutive Premier League home wins, something they hadn't achieved since December 1992 - and they have never won four in a row. With that in mind, I'd be tempted to back the draw. I can't see it being a goalless one though, and SkyBet's 7/2 on the match finishing 1-1, 2-2 or 33 looks a decent bet to me.

If you're looking to chance on your arm on just one of those scorelines, 1-1 is available at 11/2, 2-2 will return a tasty 16/1, while a 3-3 thriller is on offer at 80s. Thanks to the additions on Tom Ince and Joe Ledley, who both scored on their debuts against West Brom, Palace have plenty more firepower within their ranks now - and we all know about the attacking talent available to Moyes. I'm confident there will be goals and a 2-2 looks good value.

Glenn Murray came up trumps with the winning goal the last time Palace tasted victory over the Red Devils, back in November 2011. The striker is 9/1 to score the final goal of the game this Saturday. Is it written for the returning hero to do just that?

Whether Murray scores it or not, Palace are 2/1 to score the last goal of the game - and they are the same price to open the scoring on Saturday too. Prior to United's 0-0 draw with Arsenal in their last away game, they had conceded the opening goal in three of their last four away games, so Palace will be looking to ruffle their feathers with another fast start this weekend.

If you fancy that start to be a lightning quick one, Tom Ince and Marouane Chamakh are both available at 40/1 to score in the opening 10 minutes, while Joe Ledley is a whopping 80/1 to score in that time.

Tugby’s Tip of the Day: The group bet on the game to be drawn 1-1, 2-2, or 3-3, at 7/2.

Value Bet of the Day: I'll stick my neck on the line a little more from the above tip and go with a 2-2 scoreline - decent value at 16/1.

Long Shot of the Day: Tom Ince to score in the first 10 minutes of the game - 40/1.
