Brian Wood

5 July 2014

The club is sad to announce the recent passing of former defender Brian Wood at the age of 73.

Born in Dorset, Brian came to Selhurst Park in the summer of 1961 from West Bromwich Albion, having been known by Palace assistant manager Dick Graham.  His debut came that December and when Graham became manager Brian was paired with Alan Stephenson to become probably one of the first central defensive partnerships at the club. For the next two seasons Brian was virtually ever-present as the club gained promotion to Division Two in 1963-64 but he had the misfortune to suffer a badly broken leg in a FA Cup tie in January 1965 from which he took a long time to recover.

Although he made a return to the first team, Brian’s last appearance was in December 1966 and he then moved to Orient with just over 150 appearances under his belt, netting four goals for the club. Brian then joined Colchester United before ending his professional career at Workington.

The club sends its condolences to Brian’s family, relatives and friends at this sad time.
