AJ: 2005 Win Was Special

23 November 2014

This afternoon’s game brings back happy memories for one of the current Palace squad as we look back on a home victory back in 2005
Striker Andrew Johnson headed past Jerzy Dudek just past the half hour mark to score the winning goal in an important game for the home side as points were needed to turn fortunes around.

"It was an important victory for us at the time as we had not won since February and that game was towards the end of April. Those points took us out of the relegation zone but it was fully deserved against a side
going for a Champions League place, the side gave everything and we got our rewards."

Going into the game the odds were against a Palace victory but Iain Dowie's side gave themselves a fighting chance of avoiding the drop and Andrew believes the winning margin could certainly have been
more than just the single goal.

"We had a really good chance from Tony Popovic before I gave us the lead and looking back I can remember a number of chances for us in a game that we competed really well in.
"We all knew we could do better than our recent results had shown the side to be and we produced  a performance full of desire and just when people were writing us off we produced a win that gave the place a real
good feeling. In the end we just failed to stay up on the last day but looking back at this particular game I only have fond memories."

This afternoon he is looking forward to the latest encounter between the two sides in front of a capacity crowd.

"The place will be rocking and everyone still has memories of last season's classic so let's hope for another great game and the worldwide audience can enjoy some more great action from the Barclays Premier League."
