Ward: The Quality Shone Through

31 August 2015

Joel Ward spoke about the importance of the support that came from behind the goal as 3,000 travelling fans were in fine voice to give their side maximum vocal backing.

"Everyone knows what great support we have both home and away and this always drives the lads on and in this game they played a massive part in us getting the result. The impact of that kind of support for players in the game cannot be underestimated."

Even though the defender had converted the close range header to claim the points he was quick to make it clear it was a team effort to secure all the points.

"From the front to the back everyone did their job, the quality of the team performance really shone through. Everyone played their part and did well and we got the points we all deserved."

To pay respects to Yannick Bolasie's father, who passed away last week, the players and management wore black armbands but the winger was back to resume action and played a part in both goals.

"Yannick came on and showed what a fantastic player he is, he has obviously been going through a difficult time but everyone at the club is behind him and supporting him in everyway they can."

Joel is now joint leading scorer and this one was that extra special in more ways than one including the celebrations that were to follow.

"I don't think I have ever scored from a diving header but I'm really just delighted to get on the scoresheet and the main thing is we got the points and an important win.

"I had better luck with my knee slide than Joe Ledley did a couple of seasons ago, he caught his knee in the turf, but emotions run away with you at that stage when you have scored but I was just happy to be in the right place at the right time."

The visitors had taken a deserved lead on 65 minutes through Bakary Sako and the striker is wasting no time in making an impression at Selhurst Park

"Bakary is a great addition to the squad and in the first few games has come in and shown what he can do and hopefully can go from strength to strength and drive us on as a team."
