Mariappa Helps Jamaica Into Gold Cup Final

23 July 2015

Eagles defender Adrian Mariappa helped Jamaica reach their first ever CONCACAF Gold Cup final by pulling off a shock victory against the USA.

The Reggae Boyz's fairytale run continued as they beat the hosts on their own turf at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta to book their place in Sunday's final against Mexico, reaching this stage of the competition for the first time ever.

The underdogs took the lead on 31 minutes when Darren Mattocks flicked in a header from a long throw, and they doubled their lead five minutes later when Giles Barnes curled home a fine free-kick.

The Americans pushed hard in the second half and pulled a goal back three minutes after the restart from Michael Bradley, but Jamaican goalkeeper Ryan Thompson managed to prevent anything else finding the net to allow his side to progress to Sunday's final in Philadelphia.

They will face Mexico who managed to get the better of Panama in their semi-final in a controversial game which saw the Mexicans awarded two penalties to advance.
