Alex McCarthy has joined up with his new teammates for the Cape Town Cup tournament in South Africa this weekend after making the switch from west to south London after signing from Queens Park Rangers, and he believes the trip to the Rainbow Nation is the perfect opportunity to get to know the club’s squad and management.
“I’ve never been to South Africa before so that’s always a bonus,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to meeting the rest of the squad, get training and some game time under my belt.
“It’ll help being on the trip with the team bonding that’ll go on. I’ve spoken to a few of the boys as I know Adrian Mariappa, Jordon Mutch and Damien Delaney but I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of them.”
McCarthy is delighted to complete his move to Selhurst Park, where he will do battle with Julian Speroni and Wayne Hennessey for the number one jersey.
He added: “I’m over the moon. When I first heard about Palace’s interest I was excited because I wanted to be back in the Premier League as I’ve had a taste of it before.
“Towards the end of last season I started hearing little inklings about a move and then gradually over the summer things have picked up and slowly progressed. I went back into pre-season with QPR but things continued to move on.
“We went away to Italy last week for eight days so I’m feeling fit and raring to go. I’ve played for five minutes in one game and 90 in another so hopefully I can get a bit more game time with Palace.
“Julian and Wayne are both excellent goalkeepers who have had great careers. Julian has been unbelievable and has plenty of experience and it’s the same with Wayne – he’s been a little bit unlucky with injuries but he’s still a great goalkeeper. I’m looking forward to working with them both.”
