Opening Copa America Defeat For Mariappa

14 June 2015

Adrian Mariappa and his Jamaica side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay in their opening game of the 2015 Copa America despite a gutsy performance against a side ranked eighth in the world.

The Reggae Boyz kept their opponents at bay until the 52nd minute when Atletico Madrid midfielder Cristian Rodriguez scored from close range, but the Eagles defender received plenty of praise post-match for his display in their defence at keeping the current Copa holders at arm's length throughout the encounter.

However in the other group game Argentina were pegged back from two goals ahead by Paraguay, the latter of which Jamaica face next on Tuesday knowing a win would put them in with a shot of making the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile Mariappa was named in the provisional Jamaica squad for the Gold Cup - North America's version of the Copa America - which takes place between the 7th and 25th July in the USA and Canada.
