Jason Lokilo capped off his first start for Palace’s under-18 side by netting a last minute free-kick to earn a share of the spoils against Barnsley.
The recent signing from Anderlecht saved his team with a fine finish late on in Yorkshire to salvage something from a game that the Eagles controlled in the early stages.
With the hosts set out to defend, Palace were patient in the opening exchanges and on nine minutes they found a breakthrough thanks to a fantastic team goal. Ken Gillard’s boys strung together 15 or more passes which was finished off when Lokilo played a nice disguised pass to Callum Sturgess who crossed for Bryce Hosannah to find the bottom corner.
However Palace took their foot off the gas and only had a disallowed effort by Sam Woods chalked off for a foul to show for the remainder of their first half efforts.
They were punished on 49 minutes when they conceded a sloppy free-kick on the edge of the area which was fired into the net by Jack Alton, and then 10 minutes later possession was conceded too cheaply in their own half and it led to a one-on-one chance for the home side which Mo Saeed took to turn the game on its head.
That led to a more attacking emphasis from the Eagles and centre-back Woods put a header wide when he was found in space in the box before Corie Andrews escaped past his marker and fired over the bar.
But just as it looked like it wasn’t to be Palace’s day, the striker was fouled inside the D and Lokilo delivered from the dead ball to celebrate his first start for the club in style.
