Alan Pardew remembers the effect that the 1990 FA Cup final appearance had on the club and is aware what a place in this season’s showpiece event in May could do for us 26 years on.
“I hope we can deliver for the fans exactly as we did in 1990. Two years before that run, we had been drawing crowds of 8,000 to 10,000, and all of a sudden we jumped to 18,000, courtesy of what we achieved. For this period of our development, it is so important for us to grab the would-be Palace supporters who are sitting on the fence a little. Take them to a semi-final, get a win, and you have got them for life.
“The goal for us is not just to have a third straight year in the top flight, but to win an important trophy.”
Some of his memories of that cup run make him recall how players profiles were raised due to the media coverage of the competition and he believes it will be no different this time around.
“In terms of my profile, it had a huge impact. I know from experience that the biggest occasions demand the biggest personalities. I want the players to produce their best performance. This is the one I want to win, it is a big occasion and calls for big personalities and big players to stand up and be counted.”
