Millen: A Good Day All Round

6 August 2016

Keith Millen spoke after the 3-1 victory against Valencia about the real positives to take from the afternoon's work. "It was nice to be back playing at Selhurst and the pitch was probably the best I have ever seen it and we had a fine result against good opposition. They are a top team but today our performance showed that when we focus on our shape and organisation with players playing in their best positions we look a strong organised team. On the counter attack today we looked dangerous and with the players we had on the pitch we are a threat when we show that side of our game.

"It was great as well to score three goals and the fitness of the players we are pleased with, generally a good day all round."

This friendly saw a number of players getting game time and Millen was pleased that the good work done this week on the training ground was reflected in the 90 minutes of pre-season action.

"We have done some work this week with the squad on our discipline out of possession, we know what a handful our players can be when they have the ball but they must also know their responsibilities when they haven't got the ball at their feet. Today there were good signs and they were getting back into shape against a Valencia side who were trying to play through us. You come across that in the Premier League as the footballing teams try and do that so a lot of pleasing aspects today to see the work that the lads put in."

Connor Wickham chose the perfect time to find the net just seven days before the start of the new season and Millen knows that will do the striker no harm.

"You want your goalscorers to score goals to help their confidence but today his overall game was good and he led the line well. It wasnt just any other pre-season game today as they had to be matched every step of the way and we were pleased with his all round game, energy levels were good and he would have enjoyed it out there. "

A summers day meant a good pre-season crowd enjoyed the occasion and the home fans witnessed a fine display as the build up to the new campaign continued in the perfect way.

"The stadium looked good today on the eve of a new season and the crowd will be excited now after this match looking ahead to next week, we feel we are ready and will have a good squad to choose from next week and as we concentrate on West Brom."
