Benteke : Mixed Feelings Over Result

10 December 2016

Christian Benteke put the side back on level terms at The KCOM Stadium with his fifth goal in five games but he felt his team could have left Humberside with more than the one point.

“We will take the point from the game but looking at when we were 2-1 up we should be looking to go and win the game.

“We have mixed feelings as we could have taken all three points but unfortunately only took one, we take the point and keep working towards the next game.”

In a game where decisions given and not given provided the talking points at the end of the match, Christian was pleased to be given the opportunity to step up and convert his chance.

"I certainly think our one was a penalty, the players challenge meant Wilf went down and the referee pointed to the spot and I was pleased to be able to put us level in the game.

“I think we could have had another one with a challenge on me but that is part of football and  I am a human being and you just have to carry on.

“As I said to the referee I am a striker and if I was in the box I wouldn’t just go down, my instinct is to shoot,  for their penalty  I said to the ref that the player dived, he should have asked his assistant, they are there for that. The assistant said it wasn’t a penalty but after the decision has been made you have to carry on and get back in the game.”

The Eagles have conceded 11 goals in the last three away games but Benteke was quick to point out that the players need to defend better as a team.

“It is obviously frustrating how many goals we are conceding at the moment because we are conceding some disappointing goals from our point of view.

“We have to work on it as a team, its not just about the defence, we have to all stick together and work hard. We now come up against two really great teams (Man Utd and Chelsea) and we need to be really sharp and strong.”

Fellow striker Fraizer Campbell came off the bench to grab a late point for the visitors and his professionalism whilst out of the side has been admired.

“As the manager said in the dressing room he has been really professional and showed great character during training and he got his chance and took it, I am really happy for him because he is a great professional and a good player. “
