Alan Pardew believed that the 4-0 reverse was harsh on his side in a game where the opposition had four shots on goal and they all found the target.
“That was not a bad performance from us," Pardew told the official website as he reflected on the defeat in the north-west.
“We got in some great positions, but perhaps our final pass could have been better. We certainly threatened the goal.
“The goals changed the complexion of the game and the result doesn’t reflect what went on the pitch.”
Fabian Delph's opening goal of the afternoon broke the deadlock but it was one that goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey would be disppointed with.
“Wayne is going to have to show me how he reacts this week in training, a mistake at Villa, he needed to respond today and made another mistake.
“The ball is in his court to keep out the other two goalkeepers but I need to see it in training, I need to see a reaction from him. I will give him that chance because he deserves it.”
