Known for his no nonsense approach, Scott Guyett is responsible for making sure Palace players are fit and stay fit throughout the course of the year.
Speaking to Palace TV, Scott took presenter Chris Grierson through the rigours of Premier League level training, and spoke about the changes he’s seen as a Strength and Conditioning coach to the way players look after themselves in the close season.
“I’ve found that players are now fit twelve months of the year. I’ve been here five years and there’s only ever been two players that have come back out of shape – in fact, some of the players now come back fitter, weighing less, and with less body fat.”
With a number of players heading to the European Championships this summer, there’s a fear that those with only a couple of weeks rest will suffer burnout when it comes to the start of the season. However Guyett says regular game time means players won't have to work as hard to get back up to speed, and the players on their holidays are getting far better at taking care of themselves.
“The Euro boys will have a series of games over the summer, so they tend not to lose too much fitness and come back in really good shape.” And those with extended breaks? “Scott Dann is one example – he came back from the summer break last year weighing three or four kilos less than he did the previous season.”
