Play-Off Heartbreak For Boateng

31 May 2016

Hiram Boateng’s hopes of ending his season on loan at Plymouth Argyle ended on Monday as the Pilgrims were beaten 2-0 by AFC Wimbledon in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

Just as his Eagles teammates had experienced the week before, the midfielder was to be denied a taste of glory at the national stadium as goals from Lyle Taylor and Adebayo Akinfenwa sealed promotion to the third tier for the Dons.

Boateng played the full game for the Pilgrims who missed out on the chance on returning to League One for the first time in six seasons, but the Palace academy graduate now returns to SE25 with 30 appearances for the club under his belt and a maiden Premier League outing at Swansea City in February, and his efforts this season saw him named the Eagles’ Development Player of the Month for 2015/16.

In a quiet affair with few chances on goal it took until the 78th minute for the deadlock to be broken when Taylor scored, and after a lengthy injury stoppage the deciding goal would be scored in the 11th minute of added time when Akinfenwa slotted home a penalty to continue the Dons’ rise through the football pyramid.
