Kelly: It's About Doing The Basics

11 April 2017

Martin Kelly was able to reflect on another clean sheet for the back four as the side pulled off a vital 3-0 victory against Arsenal.  An element of the Eagles game that Sam Allardyce was keen to improve on from day one has been to be tighter at the back and respect the point rather than chase all three.

In this game the defender made 10 clearances which was the most out of any player on the pitch and believes that the message Sam Allardyce has been installing in the team about going back to basics is one of the differences that has contributed to the turn around in their league form.

Reflecting on the game the defender said “I think the basics the manager always goes on about in the meetings is having its affect now, he’s drilled the basics into us from when he’s come in”

He continued: “I think us doing that on a game to game basis and then letting our flair players as such, do their thing is working at the minute. When I first joined the club, we were a team that didn’t have all the possession but on the counter attack we were very dangerous and that proved again tonight.”

With five wins in their last six games, the Eagles are gaining points as the weeks go by and the climbing up the table to safety and the Merseyside born Kelly believes the home side showed more hunger for the points in their latest contest.

“I think it felt like we needed more, we need points on the board as they are running out, it’s the greatest league in the world and we want to stay in this league so I think throughout the team we looked like we were eager to win and the fans backed us up when we were playing. It was an all-round good performance, the team, management staff and the fans.”

the end goal come May battle for every point that is available.achieveEven-though the team are in good form, the 26-year old knows the they need to keep on performing well if they are to

“Well we want to get as many as possible, a team like Palace with the signings the Chairman, previous manager and Sam [Allardyce] has brought in we shouldn’t be in the relegation battle.

“We know that the Premier League is a tough one and getting tougher each season so we want to win as many as possible and certainly get the clean sheets. That’s what the manager has been trying to drill in to us and if we can get some more of them then certainly we will be happy.”

Even though the win was against the odds Kelly did believe that the pressure was on the home side to get something from the game as the side wanted to build on their recent good run at Selhurst Park.

“We felt there was a little bit of pressure on tonight. Arsenal at home, we knew the fans would be right up for it and we started off aggressive as the manager wanted us to do and carried on throughout with a real good team performance”
