Chairman's Comments: Swansea City

26 August 2017

We bring you the latest views of Steve Parish from his 'Steve Says' column in the match programme for the game against Swansea.

A warm welcome to Swansea's players, staff and supporters here today.
Paul Clement and his side performed the most miraculous turnaround to beat the drop last season – and also got the better of us on both occasions.

I’m fully expecting another hard fought match today.

I've cleared my diary on Thursday - it'll no doubt be a day full of calls and activity.

We've made three good additions this summer, but have got some firepower left and I’m hopeful that deals will be done.

There's been a healthy discussion amongst Premier League Chairmen around the timing of the transfer window closing.

I can't see the benefits of closing the window before the first day of the season whilst it remains open across other European leagues. I believe it’s an act of self-harm if we change the system unilaterally.

Also the current system enables clubs to see where they need reinforcements after a few games, which is especially beneficial for newly promoted clubs.

Tuesday night’s Cup win was just what we needed, and the third round tie gives us a chance to make amends against Huddersfield Town.

Our performance at Anfield last Saturday was a big improvement and I felt we deserved something from the game.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been a stand-out performer for us since his arrival despite the two league losses, and I’m pleased that he’s received another England U21 call up. I was with Gareth Southgate last week, and I’m sure if Ruben keeps performing at this level – a call up to the England squad won’t be too far away.

Dougie Freedman is back at Palace in a newly created role as Sporting Director.

He'll be working closely with Frank, Tim Coe and I on player recruitment, and day to day, the wider development of the playing and Academy setup.

Frank was keen on such a role having experienced it at Ajax, and I'm confident that Dougie will be a great addition to the staff.

We have just announced a deal with Twickets which allows season ticket holders to resell unwanted individual match tickets at face value to paid Members.

I'm really proud of this partnership as we look to offer flexibility to our loyal fans and also reduce the damaging impact of unofficial resellers.
