Since Frank de Boer took the first training session with his new group of players in July there has been much reflection on how he will line his teams up as he takes charge of a Premier League side for the first time.
Twenty four hours before the opening game against Huddersfield Town he was keen to stress that the way the team are set up can be adapted in different ways and the numbers game is one he will change depending on the situation in the game.
“Everybody says 3-4-3 can be very adventurous or exciting but you can look at it and say we play with five defenders.
“If you have a lot of the ball it is very offensive but if you do not have the ball and are dropping back then it becomes more defensive. It can look and play out in different ways depending on how the manager of the team is setting up his team and how dominant they want to be in the match.”
In the highly competitive world of top flight football the manager recongisies that this coming season will be one of learning for his squad as they adapt to his methods.
“We want to try and dominate games but we have to be realistic as to where we have come from and even though we want to be a solid club we need to acknowledge there are a lot of good teams in the Premier League and will have to call on the security of having five at the back at times."
